My Man Godfrey [UK Import]
DVD von Elstree Hill Entertainment |
4 Kundenrezensionen:How not to enjoy a true classic 1 von 5 PunktenYes - LaCava's movie is one of the high points in screwball comedy, and yes, there's incredible chemistry between Lombard and Powell, and yes, one ought to enjoy this movie. Alas, it is just not possible with this DVD (this edition of "My Man Godfrey, that is), since this is clearly the most rotten rendering of celluloid to DVD that I have ever seen. While it is acceptable not to offer any bonus materials for a 30'ies movie) (they managed with "It happened one night"), this non-quality is not. The sound is barely comprehensible, the picture lacks focus and, most of all, the image is stuttering half the time, as if either the rendering tool didn't work or the projector for the 16mm copy from which this was drawn had a broken geneva drive ... Even for as little a price as this this item is not recommendable. William Powell is at his best. 5 von 5 PunktenA dysfunctional but seemingly wealthy family takes in a new butler of dubious background. In return the butler saves the family in more ways than one. (This is a comedy) I really appreciate this movie on many levels. You may recognize several people types just in the Bullock family. The interaction between Carole Lombard and William Powell is worth watching in its self. I particularly like when Tommy Gray (Alan Mowbray) has to explain his earlier relationship with Godfrey. As good as this movie is I still like the remake with David Niven and June Allyson just as well. "My Man" Godfrey (1957) but many of his movies are hard to find. Such as "The Statue" and "Prudence and the pill." William Powell is at his best. 5 von 5 PunktenA dysfunctional but seemingly wealthy family takes in a new butler of dubious background. Or, like Gerald Weales wrote in his "Canned Goods as Caviar - American Film Comedies of the 1930s", rather "five movies at once": "the batty family story, the mysterious stranger story, the making of Godfrey Smith, the winning of Godfrey Smith and the depression film". From its wonderful art deco opening credits followed by the darkest stretch of riverside-dump imaginable with William Powell and his outcast-pals prowling for useful things in the rubbish to its unbelievable ending this film surprises the viewer every minute. William Powell is as usually great as dignified tramp turned butler turned nightclub-entrepreneur. Carole Lombard astonishes as rather silly but extremely loveable daughter of a millionaire. The supporting cast is also priceless. Eugene Pallette is the millionaire father and only member of the family with a sane mind enduring the strange habits of his kin. Gail Patrick plays Lombard bitchy sister to perfection. Alice Bradys mother is the obvious spring from which the family's battiness originates. And Mischa Auer is at his most hilarious as Brady's protégé, a Russian wanna-be bohemia-artist living of the millionaire's money yet theatrically whining every time somebody talks about money. And then there is lovely Jean Dixon as the maid also in love with Powell's Godfrey. There is so much happening in this movie that it invites repeated viewings. So thank God for this DVD-release. The print is good. The Criterion Collection edition may be better, but it also costs much more money. No extras on this DVD, but it is the film that matters. And that is, as David Thomson says "one of the greatest of comedies" by the "still underrated Gregory LaCava". |

Stage Door [FR Import]
DVD von Arcades Video |
2 Kundenrezensionen:Another great Ginger Rogers RKO movie of the 1930's 5 von 5 Punkten"Stage Door" was released for RKO Radio Pictures in 1937, and was directed by Gregory LaCava, the man who gave us the great "My Man Godfrey" just a year earlier. It has a number of top stars, such as Ginger Rogers (who is easily the Best actress ever). Then you have Kate Hepburn, Adolphe Menjou (Who appeared with Ginger again in 1942's "Roxie Hart"), and Lucille Ball in an early supporting role. There is also a very early appearance from Ann Miller. Oh, and this movie is NOT a musical. The film is set at a place called the "Footlight's Club". It's a boardinghouse full of wannabe actresses, who are there, in New York, to try and get themselves parts in Broadway shows. It would seem to be a fairly realistic look. Its full of amusing lines, and a few dramatic scenes now and again aswell. It does not have a very happy ending, at all, I would like to add, which in an odd way, makes it great. The film is really a comedy, mixed with drama. It's a decent story, and the acting is extremely good from all of the stars, and it is a very enjoyable little movie, that I could recommend. Definately worth picking up a copy to add to your film collection. |
